FOOD for THOUGHT by Steven Shamrak
Sometimes I am asked to make my letters more positive and balanced. What does it mean? Must I ignore the ugly nature of Islamic terrorism and the intent of international anti-Semitic hypocrisy to destroy Israel? There are many “balanced” publications about Middle East conflict. Their politically correct approach only facilitates the demise of Israel. This editorial is not one of them!
The U.N. Commission on the Status of Women has adopted an Israeli-sponsored resolution. It also marks the first Israeli-backed initiative centered on human rights, and the first in the UN with a specific focal point on denouncing sexual harassment in the workplace. But hours later the same commission approved a draft resolution blasting Israel for allegedly oppressing Palestinian women.
Israel to Slash Payments to the UN
The Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu directed it to slash the $2m to the United Nations as a result of the anti-Israel resolutions passed last week in the UN Human Rights Council. This cut is in addition to the $6m that Jerusalem slashed in January in the aftermath of the passage of anti-settlement Resolution 2334 in the UN Security Council.
Last week Russian-made air defenses were compromised by Moscow, leaving Iran and its allies defenseless against Israeli airstrikes. An engineer with Tehran's Ministry of Defense alleged that codes forcing anti-aircraft missiles to treat hostile Israeli fighters as friendly were sold to Tel Aviv, effectively neutralizing Syria and Iran's S-300 surface-to-air missile systems. Israel has flown dozens of air raids over Syria, and despite advanced air defenses, only the latest raid, flown last Friday, involved an
actual missile launch.
PA pollution of a river which flows into central Israel resumes two months after Civil Administration said it had been stopped. The PA is dumping illegal waste near Givat Ze'ev! The pollution is being carried out along the Ayalon river outlet, and the resulting waste water reaches the center of Israel.
The UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East peace process (UNSCO) suspended its missions to Gaza Friday after Hamas authorities partly closed the key border crossing into Israel. UNSCO is the key UN agency working on the Israeli-Palestinian Authority peace process, and the restrictions will apply to its head, UN envoy for the Middle East Nickolay Mladenov. (No ‘big’ official announcement and UNSC condemnation of Hamas, unlike Israel!)
The Israeli security cabinet has unanimously voted to approve construction of a new town for the residents of Amona, a Jewish community demolished in February under Supreme Court orders. The residents have been homeless since their town was demolished, waiting for the government to keep the promise to rebuild their town elsewhere. This is establishment of a new settlement in the West Bank for the first time in 25 years. Israel’s government approved the establishment of a new settlement in the West Bank for the first time in more than two decades. (There were no international protests when Jewish homes were demolished!)
US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley told this year’s annual AIPAC policy conference in Washington DC that at first, she didn’t expect the “Israel bashing session”. “I wanted to make sure that the United States starts leading,” said the former governor. “Leading is not saying things when it’s comfortable. It’s saying and doing things when it’s not comfortable.”
Quote of the Week:
"Don't threaten us with cutting off your aid. It will not work. I am not a Jew with trembling knees. I am a proud Jew with 3,700 years of civilized history. Nobody came to our aid when we were dying in the gas chambers and ovens. Nobody came to our aid when we were striving to create our country. We paid for it. We fought for it. We died for it. We will stand by our principles. We will defend them. And, when necessary, we will die for them again, with or without your aid." - Menachem Begin told Joe Biden on 22 June 1982 - The US is having huge problems: with Chinese expansion plans; North Korean nuclear and ballistic rocket program; Islamic State; illegal and Islamic immigration; Obama Care, just a few – but the main ‘concern’ is still where Jews are building their homes!
