Insubordination or Democracy?

by Moshe Feiglin

This week in Israel, Minister Ofir Okines decided not to recommend Professor Yael Amitai for a coveted position at the Israel-Germany Research Fund because of her signature in 2005 on a petition against IDF service in Judea and Samaria.

It is Professor Amitai’s full right to support insubordination, just as it is the full right of the rabbis to support insubordination. Insubordination – accompanied by willingness to pay the price – is a balancing and vital democratic tool against the tyranny of the majority.

Minister Okines’ imperious response expresses a culture that is far from understanding the essence of democracy.
