The debate over ultra-Orthodox service in the army is ridiculous.
Tell me something: Who has contributed more to Israel’s security? Yair Lapid or Torah Jewry’s ultra-Orthodox MK Yisrael Eichler?
I do not intend to write about the importance of Torah learning. I absolutely believe that Torah study is crucial for Israel. But let’s say that Eichler has spent his life learning Chinese. Who has contributed more to Israel’s security? Lapid or Eichler?
Eichler, without a doubt.
Why?
Because when MK Eichler reached the age of 18, he did not bother anybody. The State of Israel did not have to take care of him for three years in exchange for zero security output. Eichler did not rob Israel’s resources at the expense of its security.
Most of the soldiers in the IDF today are Yair Lapid. They serve in extraneous positions that do nothing for Israel’s security. Drafting the ultra-Orthodox against their will increases the amount of soldiers in the army who do absolutely nothing. It will deepen our deficit and worst of all – will be detrimental to Israel’s security.
What Israel needs is a professional volunteer army, not political populism.
