Last week, I visited Boaz Albert in prison. He was served administrative orders prohibiting him from entering his hometown, Yitzhar. Boaz is a farmer and a family man. This order, served without explanation, means financial ruin and family hardship. Boaz decided to ignore the order and return home. He was arrested and has been in prison for over a month – still with no explanation.
Boaz is a hero, fighting for us all. It is totally unacceptable that a citizen can be driven from his home and livelihood by an arbitrary order, with no abilitiy to defend himself. Boaz Albert could have “managed” and gone to live elsewhere in the meantime. But he decided to fight for his rights. His struggle is a warning light for a society that is rapidly losing its liberty. I call upon the Defense Minister to stop using administrative orders against those Jews disliked by the military system, leaving the draconian orders intact only in the case of “ticking time bombs.”
