"We need a sensitive and responsible leader"

by HaRav Dov Begon
Rosh HaYeshiva, Machon Meir

“When Moses was grown, he began to go out to his own people and he saw their hard labor” (Exodus 2:11). Rashi comments, “He set his eyes and heart to sharing in their distress.” Moses not only saw their hard labor but took it to heart, sharing in their distress. It was in this context that he performed his deed: “Moses killed the Egyptian and hid his body in the sand” (v. 12). Through this was understood his greatness and maturity.

Only someone who so truly feels the pain of his people that he takes responsibility and endangers himself to save them is worthy to lead the Jewish People.

Today, our nation very much needs a leader like Moses, a leader who sees and feels the pain of the Jewish People and suffers the suffering of the Land of Israel, which is being torn apart and which is dripping Jewish blood.

We need a leader who will unite the people in face of our enemies’ struggle against us. They are waging a war to banish us from our land and from Jerusalem, the heart of our nation and the heart of the world. The way to unite the nation as one man with one heart is to follow in the path of Moses, who endangered himself, fighting for the sake of the Jewish People. It is true that he grew up in Pharaoh’s palace, but he preserved his identity and his deep affinity for the People and Land of Israel. By doing so, he was privileged to be chosen by G-d to lead the people starting with their first steps onto the stage of history. His influence shall be felt forever and ever.

The Jewish People’s tangible identification with and affinity for the Torah and Land are the glue that will unite us and will, with G-d’s help, give us the strength to continue marching upward towards the complete redemption.

Looking forward to complete redemption,
With Love of Israel,
Shabbat Shalom,
Chodesh Tov.
