Alexander of Macedonia, and the American President

by HaRav Dov Begon
Rosh HaYeshiva, Machon Meir

The false idea of partitioning Eretz Yisrael between us and the Arabs was already raised by the Yishmaelim when they came to deliberate with the Jewish People before Alexander of Macedonia, who was then the ruler of the great world power of that time.

The Yishmaelim said to Yisrael: “The Land of Canaan is yours and ours. After all, it says, ‘These are the chronicles of Yishmael son of Avraham’ (Bereisheet 23:13), and, ‘These are the chronicles of Yitzhak son of Avraham’ (25:19).” One clever Jew - and Geviha ben Pesisa was his name - answered them, saying, “That very same Torah states, ‘Avraham gave all that he owned to Yitzhak. To the sons of the concubines that he had taken, Avraham also gave gifts’ (25:5-6), and he sent them away for as long as Yitzhak lived.” The Yishmaelim had no answer to this.

Today, people are still coming before the President of the United States, the head of the greatest world power, and they raise again that same foolish idea about Eretz Yisrael being partitioned, as a political solution to the unceasing violence of the Arabs from within and from without. If those same people had the sense to study Jewish history, they would know that all of these programs are nonsense and will never take effect and will never solve any problem. Quite the contrary, they will complicate matters all the more, and will merely increase the Arabs’ refusal to resign themselves to Eretz Yisrael’s existence. The fact is that we must be adamant not just because we so clearly see what the wretched Oslo accords did to us, but also because of what awaits us in the future, in accordance with the vision of the prophets and sages of Am Yisrael, who describe the stages of Am Yisrael’s rebirth in their land:

The first stage is through the ingathering of the exiles: “I will take you from among the nations, and gather you out of all countries, and bring you into your own land” (Yechezkeil 36:24). The second stage is through awakening to mass repentance: “Then I will sprinkle clean water upon you... And I will also give you a new heart and a new spirit... and I will cause you to follow My statutes, and you shall keep My judgments” (36:25-27). The third stage is through the flourishing of the Land and the increase in population: “This land that was blighted shall become like Gan Eden... The waste cities shall be filled with flocks of men” (36:35,38). Through this, the unity of Israel shall be revealed: “I will make them one nation in the land... and one king shall be king over them all” (37:22).

It is true that the nations will try to attack us in order to steal our whole land in general, and Yerushalayim in particular, as is described regarding the war of Gog and Magog: (see Yechezkeil 38:14-18). Yet Am Yisrael will achieve an enormous victory: “They shall fall upon the mountains of Israel, you, and all your bands, and the peoples that are with you” (39:4). Then G-d’s great name will be magnified and sanctified: “I will make Myself known in the eyes of many nations, and they shall know that I am the L-rd” (38:23). In the end, Bayit Shlishi will be built, and it will illuminate the whole world. “My house shall be called a house of prayer for all people” (Yishayahu 56:7).

It is true that “there are many devices in a man’s heart” (Mishlei 19:21), and in the hearts of those individuals who wish to partition the Land, G-d forbid. Yet, “it is the L-rd’s counsel that shall endure” (Ibid.). “For the L-rd will not cast off His people, nor will He forsake His inheritance” (Tehilim 94:14).

BeSorot Tovot.
Looking forward to complete salvation,
With the Love of Am Yisrael and Eretz Yisrael,
Shabbat Shalom,
Chodesh Tov.
